This weekend we got a lot accomplished. The second row of guardrail went up on the new posts that line the back stretch. Thank you to the following: Jake Starr, Rob VanDyne, Rob Lovejoy, Andy Smith, Josh Ames, Jacob Lynch, Jan Lynch, Mike Fauci, Nick Fauci, Greg Fraser, Jack Fraser, and Mark Preston. These guys were torching holes, swinging sledges, hoisting up and fastening piece after piece of the guardrail. While this was going on Chip Ayres, Mike Fauci and I removed the old breaker box from the pole. The power is back up in the garage as well as the concession stand. Thank you also to Irene Fink and Kaydon VanDyne for being our runners. They took a trip to Crocker’s to pick up some supplies and handled the food delivery. An extra special thanks to Ray Sand Jr. he contributed the cash to cover lunch for a very hungry crew! Thank you all! It was a very cold day, and you all chose to spend it at the track helping to get us closer to being ready for the 2019 Season.
The work continued on Sunday in much nicer weather. Mike Valencia and Rob VanDyne sorted the remaining guardrail that we have into piles based on its condition. Jake and I were there as well. The four of us discussed more details of how we plan to install the new fencing. We discussed other options regarding upgrades to the layout of the facility. I also cleaned up the work bench that I messed up the day before. The same one that Rob had gotten well organized during the week. 😉
Please keep an eye here for updates. Weather dependent we might wrap up pounding the posts this weekend. When the truck is coming we’ll need another good crew to help out. I’ll post details here when we know. Even if the truck isn’t coming – We have lots to do. We purchased 1250 feet of guardrail today from our friends at Pavilion Drainage. The guardrail is in 25 foot sections weighing roughly 200 lbs each. Thank you to the guys that are hauling and unloading this stuff right now – Mike Valencia, Rob VanDyne and Shawn Freeland. We might need to disassemble this batch in order to put it up. When you plan to come out, please keep the following in mind: Dress for the weather – It is still expected to be cold. Boots, gloves and lots of layers are a must. We will have a propane heater fired up in the garage to get warm by, as well as a kerosene heater in the office trailer.
When the truck is with us again we will use the system that we developed the last time that worked well. We setting posts and the top rail of guardrail as we go. We plan to continue on until the first course is complete around the perimeter of the speedway. Each piece of guardrail weighs roughly 100 pounds. If we can get several teams of people to do the work it will help us to keep going at a good pace. Last time it worked so well, because we had a lot of people lending a hand.
Tools needed: If you have an impact gun, bring it! Got a grinder – Bring that too! We will also need 1-1/4 and 15/16 sockets and wrenches.
We could also use the help of someone to bring food for the troops. We are hoping to continue to have a decent turnout from our membership each weekend. The crew will be working up an appetite out in the elements. This portion of the project is hard physical work. A warm meal, hot chocolate delivery etc. would be a great help. Please contact me if you’d be able to help with this. Thank you again to all that have been helping however they can. I am proud to be a member of this club.
